Within our consciousness, the faculty of our mind is also the arena of creation. As creative beings, it is on the screen of our minds that we create thoughts in such forms as ideas, images, concepts, and memories. Everything we do, every decision we make and direction we take, goes through our mental process. As masters of our mind we then become the masters of our life.

Unfortunately, we tend to lose that level of mastery when we allow our self to be influenced by others’ beliefs, perceptions, and thoughts. We allow them to take up residence in our subconscious, and it’s from there that they invade and even take over our creative process and thereby shape our life’s trajectory. Insecurity and anxiety will inevitably follow.

Learning how to think for ourselves often means interrupting and challenging the beliefs and perceptions that have been absorbed from parents, teachers, and society—some of which are outmoded and many of which turn out to be inaccurate! Meditation is one of the most powerful techniques to restore mental mastery and take charge of our creative process, free from any previous conditioning. Through this age-old discipline, we can free ourselves from the influences that have come to dominate our perceptions and responses, and we can reconnect with the pure, still, radiant center of the self. This is where we find our own wisdom, our own truths. These are the raw materials for the decisions we need to make to be the masters of our own destiny.

SILENCE AND NOISE

Our towns and cities are loud with the sounds of perpetual endeavor, the car has moved from being servant to tyrant, and people rush from errand to errand with less time than ever to give each other. Increasingly, we feel an urge to escape these pressures that assail us. In reaction, we recognize an emotional call that pulls us back toward simplicity. At the heart of this feeling is a power much more elemental than anything that industry or city life have to offer—the simple, healing power of silence.

Expressing a profound aspect of creation, with overtones of infinity, grandeur, and the sublime, silence should never be regarded as merely nothingness or emptiness. A composer knows that the silences between notes are as much a part of composition as the notes themselves. We can apply this analogy to our own minds. If we are thoroughly self-aware and monitor our thoughts for a few moments, we can become conscious of the spaces between and behind each new passage of thinking. This is our inner silence. Meditation is as much about attending to, and in the process prolonging, this silence as it is about purging our thoughts of impurities.

Noise can be stressful if we cannot quell our frustration of desperately wishing that it would stop. Silence can be stressful when we are addicted to our distractions, and are afraid of confronting the inner self stripped of the reassuring props of habit. Yet in silence there is deep balm for the spirit; properly attuned to its positive qualities, we can almost feel it washing over us in a motion of pure grace.
